Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums. It's the leading cause of adult tooth loss and has been linked to heart attack, stroke, pregnancy complications, and most recently, dementia. But there's good news! Dr. Gerlach offers comprehensive therapies to alleviate infection and renew periodontal health.

Symptoms of early early-stage gum disease, or gingivitis, include red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush. We treat gingivitis with a deep cleaning and instruction on proper homecare techniques. Moderate cases of gum disease often respond well to topical antibiotic therapy. If left untreated, the infection can worsen and result in periodontitis, the most severe form of gum disease. But even periodontitis is treatable, although surgery may be required.

If you require surgical treatment, Dr. Gerlach will use a soft-tissue laser to perform the procedure. Laser therapy is safe, effective, and minimizes damage to surrounding tissue. Bleeding is slight, so you won't need stitches. Recovery time is fast, too.

Don't ignore your periodontal health. If you notice a change in your gum tissue, or if you've neglected gum care over the years, visit us. We want to restore your periodontal health and give you a reason to smile!
